Charlie Ashanti can speak Cat. He takes it for granted - but when his mum and dad go missing, the cats are the only friends he can turn to. Setting out to find his parents, Charlie stows away on an incredible circus ship bound for Paris. On board he meets six proud, beautiful lions who need his help.
Together they embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

'I started reading the book casually, because I expected it to be just like any other childrens fiction. After going through the first two pages, I could not leave the book until it was finished. I had to spend one sleepless night for this! I am in search of the next two books in this trilogy now.'

'I came upon this book in a thrift store and not knowing what it was about read it with conflicting interest. It was VERY GOOD. However, I felt it was really a child''s book - I intend to give it to my 12 year old granddaughter! Coming to the "end" of it, I searched the follow ups on the net and discovered that indeed it is directed to children from 8 to 12; however, I would recommend it to adults as well - I considered it well-written and the concept of the child speaking "cat" and accompanying (or being accompanied) on a trip with lions was/is intriguing. I intend to read the two follow-up books also. '

Lionboy is a thoroughly good book. It discusses facts of life like racism. It talks about the asthma problem and a secret solution. It talks about what the near future might be like - petrol running out so there are very few cars.
